Digital Archives (Research) Project

Sound Sorcery’s Digital Archives (Research Project) engages women and gender diverse researchers to travel back in time, searching through archival footage, images, and recordings, to uncover the stories of those whose contribution to jazz has been buried by history. By publishing these findings on our socials, as part of the promotion for Sound Sorcery’s jam, we aim to restore a deep respect for the culture/s and people that created and continue to feed jazz music, acknowledging the historical and sociopolitical terrain that shapes jazz- something that is rarely addressed in tertiary jazz programs. Crucially, the archival project showcases the rich history of women, gender diverse and queer contributors to jazz, representing those who may not see themselves on mainstream stages, or venues, or as the majority in a training institution, but who can see themselves and their potential in these stories.
